Custom Wavefront Laser Dallas

In a recent FDA study

  • More than 95% of participants were satisfied with their vision following LASIK surgery.

What is Laser Vision Correction?

Lasik IllustrationLaser Vision Correction is a laser procedure that sculpts the cornea to treat refractive errors such as nearsightedness, farsightedness and/or astigmatism. The most advanced and current type of Laser Vision Correction is called Intra-LASIK (iLASIK for short).

How are Refractive Errors Measured?

iLASIKTraditionally the amount of refractive error was measured using a device called a Phoropter. The Phoropter has been around for over a century. It is the device placed in front of your eyes when the doctor measures you for glasses.

It has several limitations. It is only capable of measuring refractive errors by 0.25 diopter steps. Furthermore, it is not able to measure high order aberrations. These are imperfections that are unique to your eye that may induce visual disturbances such as glare, haloes, and starburts.

Prior to the advent of Custom Wavefront treatments, Laser Vision Correction treatments were based on information measured from the Phoropter. This only allowed correction of low order aberrations such as Myopia, Hyperopia or Astigmatism. To some, this was ironic: using information from a century plus old device to guide the treatment on a state-of-the-art laser.

What is a Custom WaveFront Treatment?

Custom Wavefront laser treatments can be used with all forms of Laser Vision Correction including Intra-LASIK, PRK and LASEK. They allow the surgeon to tailor the procedure to each individual eye and potentially improve the already excellent results available from Conventional Intra-LASIK, PRK treatment.

To perform the treatment, a 3D measurement of the eye is made with a device called a Wavescan or Aberrometer. These devices use wavefront technology to measure the entire eye and create a map. The map contains detailed optical information unique to your eye and is likened to a fingerprint of your eye.

The Surgeon uses this information to guide the Excimer laser as it sculpts and reshapes your cornea. The advantages of Custom Wavefront treatments include:

  • This allows the surgeon to treat low order aberrations (such as Myopia, Hyperopia
and Astigmatism), which affect how much you can see.
  • Unlike the phoropter, which is limited to 0.25 diopter steps, a Custom Wavefront treatment allows much more precise measurement
  • It also allows treatment of high order aberrations (such as Cornea, Spherical aberration, etc) that affect how well you can see.
